“Kerala in Colors: A Tapestry of Culture and Nature” truly captures the essence. This time, our nomadic adventure led us beyond the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. We organized our entire trip through KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation), including our hotel stays and sightseeing. They offer stunning hotels with views that are absolutely breathtaking.

Poovar Backwaters: Kerala in colors

Our journey began in Mumbai, with Thiruvananthapuram as our first stop. We took an early morning flight from Mumbai and arrived in Thiruvananthapuram by 8 am. Once we reached, we decided to visit Poovar as our first destination. Although Poovar wasn’t part of our original KTDC itinerary, our guide and tour operator were flexible and kindly arranged for us to experience a backwater ride and enjoy lunch there. We spent two hours on the boat ride, followed by a delicious lunch. Additionally, we had the opportunity to visit the shore and refresh ourselves with some fresh coconut water.

Later that evening we visited the Kerala arts and crafts village. The Kerala Arts and Crafts Village is a cultural hub located near Varkala, showcasing the rich traditions and craftsmanship of Kerala. It offers visitors a chance to explore a wide variety of handmade art, including intricate wooden carvings, Kathakali masks, brass sculptures, and traditional Kerala handlooms.

Padmanabhaswamy Temple

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram is one of the most revered and historic temples in India. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is known for its stunning Dravidian architecture and the awe-inspiring deity of Padmanabha, depicted in a reclining position. As a symbol of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage, the temple offers a serene and majestic experience for visitors.

That evening, we also explored the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, enjoying a one-hour trail and witnessing some incredible wildlife. After returning to the hotel and freshening up, we headed to Kovalam Beach, where we spent the rest of the evening relaxing by the shore.

Jatayu Earth Center: Kerala in colors

On our way to Kumarakom, our tour operator recommended a visit to the Jatayu Earth Center in Chadayamangalam. Although it wasn’t included in our original itinerary, we had the opportunity to stop by since it was conveniently along our route to Kumarakom. The center features a massive sculpture of Jatayu, believed to be the largest bird sculpture in the world, perched on a rock.It commemorates the epic battle between Jatayu and the demon king Ravana, who abducted Sita. The statue also marks the site where Lord Rama liberated the bird, Jatayu, from his mortal life.

The center also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and a range of adventure activities, including a cable car ride and a 6D theater, making it a blend of mythology, nature, and modern entertainment. After reaching Kumarkom, we visited an ayurvedic facilty called Amritha Ayurveda Kumarkom. We decided to opt for a couples massage which was 7500/- per couple and which was a two hour head to toe oil massage.

Aranya Niwas Thekkady: Kerala in Colors

We began our journey early in the morning, as it was a four-hour drive. Our destination was the Arnaya Hotel, located along the Periyar River in the heart of the Periyar Forest, where we were set to embark on a wildlife boat ride.

Periyar Forest Reserve

We had booked a wildlife boat ride that took us across the lake, where we spotted various wild animals, including deer, antelope, wild boar, bison, elephants, and monkeys. After enjoying the 1.5-hour ride, we returned to the hotel. Since we weren’t allowed to venture out after 5:30 pm, we had dinner at the hotel. Later that evening, a large deer approached the hotel, and we fed it a flower. It stayed nearby, and soon after, we saw two large porcupines—my first time encountering them.

Thekkady Spice Haven: Where Nature and Flavors Meet

After breakfast, we left early for Munnar and made a stop at the Thekkady Spice Plantation on the way. There, we shopped for Ayurvedic products, medicines, and a variety of spices. As we journeyed through the foggy mountains, we stopped for Maggie and then continued on to the tea plantation site. The entry fee was 50/- and we spent about an hour there, having a great time and taking numerous pictures together.

Munnar Tea Plantations

We headed to our hotel, Tea County, for a two-night stay and checked in in the evening. After settling in, we took a stroll around the neighborhood, exploring the local market and spending some time there. We then returned to the hotel and enjoyed dinner on-site.

Munnar and its Adventures

The next day was packed with adventure. Our driver informed us that we wouldn’t be returning to the hotel until night. First, we visited Wonder Valley, a small adventure park, where we enjoyed activities like the couple zip line and other sports, spending about three hours there. Afterward, we embarked on a jeep safari to the highest point in Munnar, a thrilling three-hour excursion.

Adventure Park and Kalaripayttu- Kerala

After finishing the safari, we visited a handloom store specializing in handcrafted sarees and dresses. We had also booked tickets for a one-hour performance of Kalari Payattu, an ancient Indian martial art that originated in Kerala. After the show, we had the opportunity to take pictures with the artists. Following a delightful dinner, we returned to the hotel.

Water Metro at Cochin: Kerala in colors

Next, we set off for our destination, Cochin, embarking on a five-hour journey, and arrived in the afternoon. Our first stop was a museum, followed by a visit to Fort Cochin, where we spent some time exploring the area. We also had the unique experience of riding India’s first water metro, which took us to the High Court destination. The 15-20 minute journey was quite enjoyable. We then checked into the Bolgatty Palace and Island resort in Cochin for an overnight stay.

As our time in Kerala came to an end, we reflected on the countless memories made — from the tranquil backwaters to the misty tea plantations, the rich culture, and the warm hospitality of its people. Kerala, with its serene landscapes, vibrant traditions, and unparalleled beauty, had left an indelible mark on our hearts. Though our journey here had concluded, the experiences, stories, and moments of joy we shared would forever echo in our minds. Until we meet again, Kerala, you’ve been a true paradise.
